Purpose

Kidbrooke Repair Café aims to provide safe repair sessions where visitors and volunteers can learn repair skills, reduce waste and share knowledge.

Safety is always more important than completing a repair.

Responsibilities

Coordinator

The coordinator is responsible for:

  • Ensuring sessions are organised safely.
  • Maintaining risk assessments.
  • Ensuring volunteers understand safety procedures.
  • Responding to incidents.

Volunteers

Volunteers must:

  • Follow safety guidance.
  • Work within their skills and experience.
  • Stop work if they identify a risk.
  • Ask for assistance when unsure.

Visitors

Visitors must:

  • Follow volunteer instructions.
  • Provide accurate information about items.

Repair Safety Principles

Electrical Items

Electrical repairs must only be attempted by volunteers with appropriate knowledge.

Volunteers should:

  • Check items before opening.
  • Avoid unsafe repairs.
  • Use appropriate testing equipment.

Tools

Tools must:

  • Be used correctly.
  • Be stored safely.
  • Be checked before use.

Soldering

When soldering:

  • Use appropriate ventilation or fume extraction.
  • Wear suitable eye protection.
  • Keep hot equipment away from flammable materials.
  • Allow equipment to cool before storage.

Workspace

The repair area should:

  • Remain organised.
  • Have clear walkways.
  • Provide appropriate lighting.

Risk Assessment

Risk assessments will be maintained for activities including:

  • Electrical repairs
  • Soldering
  • Use of tools
  • Workshops
  • Public events

Accidents and Incidents

All accidents, near misses or safety concerns should be reported to the coordinator.

Records should be kept where appropriate.

Electrical Repair Limitations

Kidbrooke Repair Café does not carry out repairs where:

  • The item presents a safety risk
  • The volunteer does not have appropriate knowledge
  • Specialist equipment is required

Safety takes priority over completing a repair.

Insurance

Kidbrooke Repair Café will maintain appropriate insurance cover for activities undertaken.

First Aid

The organiser should know:

  • Location of first aid equipment
  • Venue emergency procedures
  • Emergency contact arrangements

Any incident should be recorded.

Review

This policy will be reviewed as activities and equipment expand.
